Christina Baker
President

Christina Baker

Christina Baker, RDH, earned her Bachelor of Science in dental hygiene in 2013 from UMKC School of Dentistry and her Master of Education in educational, school, and counseling psychology in 2019 from the University of Missouri. She served as faculty for 8.5 years at UMKC, where she served as assistant clinical professor, coordinated multiple clinics and taught numerous didactic courses.

She enjoys serving her patients in a private practice in Kansas City, where she provides comprehensive care and promotes lifelong health. She especially values the relationships formed with her patients.

Christina has participated on the board of the Supreme Chapter of Sigma Phi Alpha since 2018, and she has served as president since 2023. She enjoys dedicating time on the board in service to the members and the community. She also serves on the board of the UMKC Dental Hygiene Alumni Association, and has served as president of the Greater Kansas City Dental Hygienists’ Association.

Barbara Brent
Treasurer

Barbara Brent

Barbara Brent, DHA, MSAH, RDH, FADHA, began her career in 1981 with a certificate in dental hygiene from the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) School of Health-Related Professions, which sparked a lifelong passion for oral health. She spent more than 30 years in private practice across Mississippi before transitioning to academia in 2014 as a part-time clinical instructor at UMMC’s School of Dentistry. She now serves as assistant professor and dental hygiene clinic director, where she shapes curriculum, mentors students and leads by example.

Her academic achievements include a Bachelor of Science in dental hygiene from UMMC in 2014, a Master of Allied Health from East Tennessee State University in 2024 and a Doctorate in Health Administration from UMMC in 2024. She has also served as both delegate and alternate delegate for the Mississippi Dental Hygienists’ Association, where she advocated for the profession and influenced policy.

Barbara’s journey reflects dedication, lifelong learning and leadership in dental hygiene. Through education, service and advocacy, she continues to inspire future generations.

Shelly Costley
Western Trustee

Shelly Costley

Shelly Morgan Costley, RDH, FADHA, earned both her Associate of Science in dental hygiene and her Bachelor of Science from Weber State University. Following more than 20 years in private practice, she returned to graduate school and completed a Master of Education in curriculum and instruction. She was inducted into the Beta Mu Chapter of Sigma Phi Alpha in 2009.

Currently, Shelly serves as the first-year coordinator for the dental hygiene program at Weber State University. Her teaching and professional expertise focus on instrumentation, oral health education, sharpening and undergraduate research. She is actively engaged in mentoring students and frequently travels with them to present at the American Dental Hygienists’ Association national convention.

Shelly has published on instrumentation and delivered hands-on continuing education courses in Utah and Wyoming on oral health education and instrument sharpening. Beyond teaching, she has held multiple leadership roles. She previously served on the executive committee of the Weber State University faculty senate, is a past president of the Utah Dental Hygienists’ Association and a member of the UDHA legislative committee. She is honored to be the Sigma Phi Alpha western trustee.

Tamra Hoffman
Central Trustee

Tamra Hoffman

Tamra Hoffman, RDH, is a dedicated dental hygienist and educator who brings her clinical expertise and passion for teaching to the clinic and classroom. She specializes in oral radiology, where she guides both dental and dental hygiene students in developing the technical precision and interpretive skills essential to the field. She creates a positive and dynamic learning environment, where she encourages growth, builds competence and believes that having fun is an essential part of the educational journey. Tamra has presented continuing education courses to dental and dental hygiene professional organizations on a range of intraoral and extraoral radiology topics. Additionally, she provides didactic and clinical instruction, including practical teaching strategies to dental hygiene dental assisting educators.

In 2005, Tamra received her Bachelor of Science in dental hygiene from UMKC School of Dentistry, where she is now an assistant clinical professor in oral pathology, radiology and medicine. Tamra was initiated into the Alpha Gamma Chapter as faculty in 2014. She also earned her Master of Health Professions Education from UMKC School of Medicine in 2025.

Roxanne Dsouza
Eastern Trustee

Roxanne Dsouza

Dr. Roxanne Dsouza Norwood is an assistant professor of dental hygiene programs in the Department of Periodontology, Endodontics and Dental Hygiene at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH), Adams School of Dentistry.

In her current role, Roxanne works with dental, undergraduate dental hygiene and graduate dental hygiene students on research projects, didactic education and clinical education. She is the senior dental hygiene clinic director, directs undergraduate dental hygiene periodontology and serves as the dental hygiene honors thesis departmental liaison.

Roxanne received both her Bachelor of Science in dental hygiene in 2016 and her Master of Science in dental hygiene education in 2018 from UNC-CH. She received her Doctor of Education in adult and community college education from North Carolina State University in 2024. She has a background in clinical and educational research and has presented her research nationally and published in several peer-reviewed journals including Dimensions of Dental Hygiene, Nurse Education Today and Nursing Education Perspectives. She has also participated in and led several interprofessional initiatives across healthcare disciplines at UNC.

Roxanne is an active member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, American Dental Education Association, president of the Xi Chapter of Sigma Phi Alpha and eastern trustee of the Supreme Chapter of Sigma Phi Alpha.

Angie Garner
Executive Secretary

Angie Garner

Angie Garner, RDH, Ph.D., FADH, FMAS, has been a practicing registered dental hygienist since 2001. Her clinical expertise has been in the dental management of patients with oral cancer and the medically compromised.

Angie is a full-time professor at the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Dentistry in the Department of Dental Hygiene. She is a member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and has served as the continuing education chair for the Mississippi Dental Hygienists’ Association for more than a decade. She holds fellowships in both the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and Mississippi Academy of Sciences. She has presented and published nationally, which has led to her being a reviewer of numerous scientific journals.

Angie’s clinical and research interests involve early detection, patient education and management of head and neck cancers. Angie has enjoyed being the executive secretary of the Supreme Chapter of Sigma Phi Alpha since 2017.
